In terms of both style and substance this film reminded me of Dead Man
(Jim Jarmusch, 1995) : both are black and white period pieces, both
stories are a mix of esotericism, psychedelic surrealism and dark
humour, and both films vacillate between the sinister and the comical.
Another thing the two films share in common is that when the end
credits roll you may not be entirely sure what you've just seen. Some
people may find this annoying; others (like myself) may find such
uncertainty not only thoroughly satisfying but also the mark of a great
film.
If you liked Dead Man then I'd say there's a good chance you'll enjoy
this film too. If, on the other hand, you absolutely hated Dead Man,
then A Field in England is probably not your cup of tea.
