Good times, good times indeedAugust 31, 2010 Lark I cant understand why this film has been so badly received by fans of the previous film and general viewers together.
The storyline remains, broadly speaking, the same, there is an ancient artifact, a golden tablet, in a museum which animates the exhibits with life when the night falls and the moon shines. Ben Steller returns as the museum guard from the original, he has moved on and is a successful inventor, although not necessarily happy, he has not been in contact with the museum of the original film for some time. The exhibits of which are being moved out to storage in the Smithsonian as new holographic exhibits are planned as replacements.
All the characters from the original make reappearences, however briefly, and Steller's character is enticed once more into action by a frankly brilliant phone call for help from the characters of the original. They have moved to the Smithsonian but waiting there for them is the evil twin of the ancient mummy featured in the original, intent on world conquest, beginning with the museum, Ben and his buddies.
As with the first the film succeeds in bringing a host of heroes and villains from history, mainly US history, into play, this time Abe Lincoln, although Teddy Roosevelt does feature in two seperate incarnations, Amelia Aerhart, Al Capone, Ivan The Terrible (Or the Awesome depending on the translation) and Napoleon Bonaparte. There is some very good humour involving each and all the characters but they also succeed in making the villains convincingly villainous, considering the movie's target audience.
In making comparisons I would be inclined to compare this movie with Bill And Ted's Excellent Adventure [DVD] [1988] rather than the original Night In The Museum. Other new magical features in this film include paintings coming to life and the characters being able to traverse the worlds between painting or photographic exhibits and real life. Some new features are reminiscent of the old, for instance a giant squid exhibit plays a part similar to that of a giant dinosaur skeleton "Rex" in the original.
Since watching the original, and particularly since watching Tropic Thunder - Single Disc [DVD] [2008] and The Heartbreak Kid [DVD] [2007] its arguable that Stiller can seriously spoil movies with show boating and a unique, to be charitable, style of humour. Thankfully this is actually minimised or contained in this feature, if only because he has to share the stage with so many other great performers and characters from history.
I highly recommend this, whether you are a fan of the original movie or new to the franchise, it is a fundamentally enjoyable feature, good vs. bad, laughs, heroics, with the good guys prevailing in the final instance.
Not such a memorable nightAugust 26, 2010 B. C. Smith(Fressingfield, Suffolk) I was a little disappointed with this sequel. It was not as good as the first film and seemed a bit confused.
Not badAugust 14, 2010 Big Al Not as good as the underrated first film as it goes straight into the action without setting up the plot or characters much.
Entertaining -July 5, 2010 Dodster(UK) The sequel finds our hero, Ben Stiller, as an inventor, having moved on from his position as night watchman.
He visits his old haunt, but finds the exhibits being replaced by virtual exhibits and packed off for storage in the Smithsonian.
The remainder of the movie is about him rescuing his 'friends'...
Fun and entertaining, but I didn't find the storyline as strong as the original.
If you enjoyed the orginal, this is worth watching, but I didn't think it was as good as the 'Night at the Museum'.
Might musuem 2June 19, 2010 C. L. Podbery A wonderful second movie.
